Early on Sept. 14, the Suomi NPP satellite captured this image that shows Super Typhoon Meranti as it hit the island of Itbayat in the Luzon Strait. The waxing gibbous (93% of full) moon provided quite a bit of illumination for the Day Night Band on VIIRS to observe quite a number of features, including (tropospheric) gravity waves emanating from the very well defined eye, mesovorticies within the eye itself and a lone lightning "streak" near the eyewall itself. Super Typhoon Meranti was packing maximum sustained winds of 178 mph (155 knots) as it moved south of Taiwan early Wednesday morning. Although the island was spared a direct hit from the storm, its power could still be felt across much of Southern Taiwan. Just check out this video below showing winds from the storm wreaking havoc at an unidentified container depot:

Super Typhoon Meranti is believed to the best strongest storm on earth so far in the 2016, and the strongest typhoon since Super Typhoon Haiyan slammed the Philippines in 2013. The storm has since been from Super Typhoon strength as it approaches mainland China.

Update: The footage above appears to have been taken in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, one of the hardest hit areas from Super Typhoon Meranti. The photos below show the aftermath.
